Rich sources of natural colour for dyemaking and ecoprinting are to be found growing all around North Edinburgh, sometimes the most common of weeds. Shades of orange and pink obtained from Dock seed dye! Yes the humble Rumex obtusifolius and its relative Yellow Dock may have been used to colour early tartan. My own 2020 lockdown experiments involved upcycling some lovely cotton, including an old NHS bedsheet. Photos of some pieces made using local plants this midsummer, to be installed at Granton Castle Walled Garden as part of the new dyeplant area interpretation. Many of the plants used have medicinal and wildlife value too.
Dock seed, willow bark, madder, iron and alum with some midsummer weeds, a few exotic leaves and the magic rocket stove!

Yes the dye made from dock seedheads was used to dye the cotton before ecoprinting in the first couple of images. The little orange pink bag is with the seedhead dye, I posted about the dyemaking experience for some advice on Natural Dye Education site.
